UK Cosmetic Surgery Guide
The popularity of cosmetic surgery has increased greatly in recent years, and is no longer the preserve of the very wealthy.
If a patient is distressed by an aspect of their appearance, cosmetic surgery can bring real improvement. It is, of course, important to recognise that cosmetic surgery will not give a person a new personality or guarantee a fulfilled life. However, the vast majority of people who undergo this kind of surgery are happy with the results.
Cosmetic surgery was developed by putting the techniques of reconstructive plastic surgery to use in an aesthetic context. For example, the techniques of implant reconstruction have developed into the ability also to enhance the facial and bodily appearance.
The General Medical Council recommends all patients be referred by a GP or another consultant. It is, therefore, in a patient’s best interests to approach their GP for a referral letter.
Of the many procedures that can be undertaken, the most popular type of cosmetic surgery amongst younger patients are breast implants, liposuction, and rhinoplasty (nose jobs). Cosmetic surgery can, of course, be performed on adults of all ages, both men and women.
Please refer to the sections below for information on specific types of cosmetic surgery.
